How it happened, in order.

From a social-media poll to a signed executive order in about ten days — and a definition still to come.

1. June 2026

   The groundwork: voluntary frontier-model vetting

   The administration signs an executive order setting up voluntary pre-release vetting of frontier models and a federal clearinghouse for AI-related cybersecurity risks — notably stopping short of mandatory licensing. The tone is set: cooperation with industry, not compulsion.

2. Mid-September 2026

   The name is chosen by poll

   The president runs a poll on Truth Social asking followers to pick the replacement term: “super intelligence” vs. “superior intelligence.” About 65% choose “super intelligence.” The rebrand now has its name.

3. September 22, 2026

   “Welcome to the new world of super intelligence”

   Addressing the UN General Assembly, the president announces the United States will officially replace “artificial intelligence” with “Super Intelligence (SI)” in official documents, arguing the word “artificial” makes the technology sound fake. Within hours, speculators begin snapping up .si domains — Slovenia’s country-code TLD. Netcraft later reports .si registrations overtook .ai within about 25 hours of the speech.

4. September 2026 · before the order

   Diplomats get the memo early

   The State Department instructs diplomats in its international organisations bureau to use “super intelligence” or “SI” in place of “artificial intelligence” — the first federal agency to move.

5. September 22–29, 2026

   The .si frenzy

   Registrations of .si domains run at roughly 3,700 a day — versus about 3,500 in the whole month of August — pushing Slovenia’s registry past 220,000 total domains. Slovenia’s registry publicly advises trademark holders to secure their .si names. More than half of the speculative registrations are quickly listed for resale on the domain aftermarket.

6. September 29, 2026 · morning

   America.gov launches; the rename is previewed

   At the launch of America.gov, billed as a one-stop shop for navigating the federal government, the president previews the day’s signing: “We are going to be signing a document renaming artificial intelligence. It’s not artificial, we all agree on that.”

7. September 29, 2026 · midday

   The White House lunch and the Accord

   At a White House lunch with tech executives, the president and the leaders of Google, Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, xAI, and NVIDIA sign the White House Accord on Super Intelligence: Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities — a voluntary, “morally binding” pact built on four layers: internal controls, an internal verification team, an independent external auditor, and an independent board committee. “I think I’m seeing tremendous self-policing,” the president tells reporters afterward.

8. September 29, 2026 · evening

   The executive order is signed

   President Trump signs “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence,” directing the executive branch to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “artificial intelligence” and “AI” in official correspondence, websites, reports, and policy documents. The legal definition is unchanged, past documents stay as written, and the White House science adviser gets 60 days to propose a formal federal definition.

9. ≈ November 28, 2026 · upcoming

   The 60-day clock runs out

   The Assistant to the President for Science and Technology is due to deliver proposed legislative language for a federal definition of “Super Intelligence” — the next real decision point in this story. This page will be updated when it lands.
